Lamezia Terme (SUF) airport: tips, airlines, and review

An insider's look at Lamezia Terme airport

I grew up flying in and out of this airport. Today this airport is still the largest and best connected in the Calabrian region. Calabria has 2 more airports (Crotone and Reggio Calabria) but are not well connected, sadly. The airport is located in Lamezia Terme in the province of Catanzaro. Simply put the Lamezia Terme airport is geographically in the middle of the region. It’s easy to travel anywhere from there.

Here are some important facts about this airport if you are not familiar:

Airport Review

It’s old. Really old. It’s also small, but really functional! It’s been improving steadily in the last few years as more airlines/people are starting to discover this location. There are a handful of stores pre check-in area including a really good espresso bar with all sorts of delicious goodies.

Don’t expect extensive seating areas in the pre check-in area of the airport. Keep that in mind when planning your trip to the airport before your flight. Chances are you won’t find a seat before passing security.

Parking

It’s a total mess. Plan to get dropped off if possible. Finding parking is a sport on it’s own there, though as I said above things are improving. I just did a quick Google search and it looks like that now they offer electronic parking reservations for the airport, though I cannot speak for how far the parking lot is.

Airlines

Surprisingly this airport is actually quite well connected. Many low cost airlines like Air Transat, Ryan Air, Easy Jet, Aegean Airlines, Air Italy etc. have started to offer flights into the Lamezia Terme (SUF) airport. I did a quick search just now and I found direct flights from Lamezia Airport to Malta for under 50 Euros!!!! Incredible right?

There are of course major airlines flying into Lamezia: Alitalia, Air France, Swiss, Lufthansa, KLM etc. I have written an entire article about which airlines offer direct flights into Lamezia Terme Airport.

Traveling To and From Lamezia Terme Airport

You are going to find the usual taxi arrangements as you would in any other airport around the world. Nothing new really, BUT Googling around researching for this article I found some really cool services that allow you too book taxis to and from the Lamezia airport in advance. The service I found is called Zip Transfers and they have some great pricing for booking private car transportation to and from the airport.

If instead you are looking to travel by train, that’s also fairly easy. The airport is about 2km from the main railway train station. There is a shuttle that runs every 20 minutes between the train station and the airport. Once you arrive at the railway station “Nicastro” you have access to the entire network of trains offered by Trenitalia, the official Italian railway system.
